Selling Car Care Products on Amazon? Your SDS and Compliance Matter More Than You Think

Amazon has become one of the largest distribution channels for car care and detailing products. But with that reach comes a compliance framework that catches many sellers off guard.

By The Compounded Compliance Team

If you manufacture or sell car care chemicals (wheel cleaners, degreasers, polishes, coatings, interior cleaners, or any product with a chemical formulation), Amazon's compliance requirements are something you need to understand before you list, not after your listing gets suspended.

From Amazon's own policy: "Customer safety is of paramount importance to Amazon. Customers need to be confident that they will find a comprehensive selection of safe, reliable and compliant products on Amazon, no matter who is the seller."

What Amazon Requires

Amazon classifies many car care products as "dangerous goods" (also called hazmat). This doesn't mean your product is dangerous in the everyday sense; it means it meets certain criteria under transportation and storage regulations that require additional documentation.

For products classified as dangerous goods, Amazon typically requires:

A compliant Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

Your SDS must be in the GHS 16-section format, current, and accurately reflect the product being sold. Amazon uses the SDS to classify your product and determine storage and shipping requirements. An outdated, incomplete, or inaccurate SDS can result in listing removal.

Product classification information

Amazon may ask you to provide or confirm the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, and packing group for your product. This information comes directly from your SDS (Section 14: Transport Information).

Exemption documentation (if applicable)

Some products may qualify for limited quantity exemptions or may not be regulated for ground transport. If your product qualifies, having clear documentation of the exemption can prevent unnecessary restrictions on your listing.

Common Issues We See with Car Care Sellers

SDS doesn't match the product listing

The product name on the SDS doesn't match the ASIN. The container size listed is different. The formulation has changed since the SDS was created. Amazon's automated systems flag these discrepancies.

SDS is outdated or generated for a different market

An SDS created for the EU market or translated from another language without proper U.S. regulatory alignment will often fail Amazon's review. The document needs to reflect U.S. OSHA HCS requirements.

Missing or incorrect transport information

Section 14 of the SDS is critical for Amazon. If transport information is missing, incomplete, or incorrect, Amazon may classify your product more restrictively than necessary, or reject the listing entirely.

No understanding of FBA vs. FBM implications

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) has stricter requirements for dangerous goods because Amazon is storing and shipping the product from their warehouses. Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) may have fewer restrictions, but you're still responsible for compliance.

Beyond Amazon: The Broader E-Commerce Compliance Picture

Amazon isn't the only platform tightening compliance requirements for chemical products. Walmart Marketplace, eBay, and other platforms are increasingly requiring SDS documentation and proper hazmat classification. If you're selling car care products through any online channel, having your SDS and labeling in order isn't just good practice; it's becoming a prerequisite for doing business.

We Get It: This Isn't What You Signed Up For

You got into the car care business because you make great products. Navigating Amazon's dangerous goods classification system wasn't part of the plan. But it's part of the reality of selling chemical products at scale. The good news is that getting your SDS right solves most of these problems at the source.
